There's a power plant right near here -- that makes us more sensitive to everything else. Especially about mercury and other toxins that are released into the air. There's no doubt that it's harmful -- complying with the new regs would be good, but I hear Bush is backing off. It's the Salem power plant -- you can see the stacks from here -- the prevailing winds blow it all here.
"Healthlink" has been working for a couple of years to reduce the emissions. Mitt Romney showed up once to say there'd be no grandfathering -- that they'd have to comply. But Bush has relaxed the regs and the power plant is able to put out more emissions than it should. The community is concerned -- whether you live here or not, you want it to go the right way.
1st mom: We noticed there's a lot of women with cancer -- all of healthy ages -- all downwind from the power plant or from the lead mills. We don't know the reason why, but a lot of healthy women seem to get cancer. The lead mills say "contaminated area" -- they're up the train tracks and come right into town. I would think we have a high rate of cancer in this community. It shocks me how many people are getting it.
What would you have legislators look at? The power plants and the lead mills -- see if our cancer rate is higher than the rest of the area. Is there contamination going on? Dig deeper into the roots of where the cancers are coming from.
